Chevron: Fellows from across industries meet to discuss lower carbon goals

“The idea behind the Industry Fellows Forum is fairly straightforward: It’s about exchanging ideas on reducing carbon intensity,” said Arthur Lee, a Chevron Fellow and principal advisor, Strategy and Sustainability.

Recently, we hosted the 16th annual Industry Fellows Forum at our headquarters in San Ramon, California. The gathering brought together Fellows in various industries—from energy and technology to manufacturing, aerospace and chemicals—to discuss lower carbon efforts in their respective businesses.

“We have a great story to tell,” Lee said. “Between our technology and people, I think folks are oftentimes surprised.”

Chevron is working toward a lower carbon future. The challenge we face is how to accelerate that transition while ensuring that affordable, reliable, ever-cleaner energy is available to meet the growing needs of the world.

Energy enables progress, and it is essential to modern life for billions of people around the world. Reducing carbon emissions is the goal, but we recognize that we must do so without sacrificing prosperity or security. Recent geopolitical events have demonstrated the importance of balancing energy policy with energy security, economic prosperity and environmental protection.

“Oil and gas is necessary, because we cannot do this with just renewables,” Lee said. “We need renewables, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is the large-scale technology that will get us there. And CCUS is just one part of our story, but it’s a big one.”

CCUS is the process of capturing carbon dioxide and either using it to make things such as building materials (utilization) or permanently storing it thousands of feet below the surface (storage).

Fellows from Bayer, Boeing Research & Technology, General Electric, General Motors, IBM, Procter & Gamble and the U.S. Department of Energy attended the forum with the goal of connecting with Fellows from Chevron to make progress in the lower carbon space.

Chevron is working to grow its hydrogen business, become a CCUS leader and develop emerging technologies such as geothermal and renewable fuels. We are also working with companies that use our products in an effort to help them achieve their own lower carbon goals.

“We would set expectations that they—our customers—would use lower carbon intensity fuel ,” Lee said. “Their fuel use would become part of that supply chain and help reduce lifecycle emissions. That kind of partnership can foster sustainability.”

This forum is just one way Chevron is bringing people together to pursue a lower carbon future.
