Chevron Phillips: CPChem to support students studying STEM fields at HBCUs through internship opportunities, mentoring and scholarships
Chevron Phillips Chemical (CPChem) is proud to sponsor the Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI), a collaborative program aimed at creating pathways for students from underrepresented communities to enter and succeed in the chemical industry.
FOSSI is a collaboration between the American Chemistry Council (ACC), the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), Chemours and the HBCU Week Foundation. The initiative provides opportunities for manufacturers, supply chain partners and other stakeholders to fund scholarships, provide internship opportunities and facilitate mentoring and leadership training for students majoring in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
With an commitment of $480,000, CPChem is sponsoring 10 Scholars over the next four years, joining a growing list of organizations who together have raised more than $7.6 million dollars. FOSSI convenes the chemical industry to make a significant impact on the industry’s future.
“The challenges facing society and our industry require human ingenuity and innovation,” said CPChem CEO Bruce Chinn. “As the world’s population grows, and the middle class expands, we must meet the increasing demand for our products while delivering sustainable solutions. The diversity and talent of our workforce is critical to our success in accomplishing our sustainable growth plans. Programs like FOSSI help equip our future workforce with the perspective, intellect and innovation mindset to tackle these pressing challenges while supporting our long-term diversity efforts to strengthen our employee pipeline.”
Programming and awards for the first cohort of FOSSI Scholars begins in Fall of 2021. Internships at CPChem facilities for the program begin in Summer of 2023. To learn more about the initiative, visit AIChE
