Ecopetrol informs that the Liria YW12 exploratory well, located in the municipality of Aguazul, Casanare, confirmed the presence of gas and light oil of 49 ° API, a milestone that drives the exploration activity carried out directly by the company in the Piedemonte Llanero.
The exploratory well is 100% Ecopetrol and marks the beginning of a new hydrocarbon field in this area of the country. As part of this campaign, the company plans to drill another delimiting well in the area and, if successful, declare a new field called Recetor West commercially available in the short term, while progress is made in defining the magnitude of the find.
Liria YW12 reached a total depth of 19,750 feet and tested hydrocarbons in the Mirador Formation, at a depth between 16,862 and 17,407 vertical feet from the surface. This objective was also achieved with excellent performance in terms of health, safety and environment (HSE, for its acronym in English).
During the initial tests, oil was produced with a maximum daily production of 804 barrels per day (bpd) of crude, with a 7% water cut, and a gas flow of up to 8.2 million cubic feet per day (Mcfd), that add up to 2,240 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boped). In total, 29,720 barrels of oil equivalent were extracted in initial tests. During the extensive testing phase, additional clean-up work will be carried out in an effort to increase well productivity.
The discovery of light oil allows the company to balance its current crude oil portfolio and have additional production of oil that has a high price in the international market. At the same time, the volumes of gas discovered allow increasing the availability of a key energy for the energy transition.
Its proximity to the Cupiagua and Cusiana fields, which supply more than 60% of the gas that Colombians consume, allows the company to take advantage of the existing oil infrastructure to facilitate its development. The discovery contributes to maintaining the country’s energy security.
“We are pleased to announce this discovery in the Piedemonte Llanero, where we already have an important gas production that leverages our energy transition strategy. Once the exploratory success carried out directly by Ecopetrol has been confirmed and thus start the consolidation of a new hydrocarbon production field, we will carry out a series of actions to speed up the start of its production and the delimitation of this discovery that will contribute to increasing reserves of the company ”, stated Felipe Bayón, president of Ecopetrol.
