European Commission: Commissioner Simson in Greece to discuss energy policy, participate in Delphi Economic Forum
Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson will be this week in Greece to discuss energy policy with key policymakers and business actors of the Greek energy sector, and to participate in the 7th edition of the Delphi Economic Forum. The country visit comes at a crucial time for the future of the EU’s energy policy, as Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine has emphasised the need to accelerate the green transition and do away with Russian fossil fuels imports as soon as possible.
The Commissioner will meet Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Energy Minister Kostas Skrekas and the Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis. On Friday, she will attend a joint session of the EU Affairs Committee, Production and Trade Committee and the Environment Committee of the Greek Parliament, and meet the Greek Association of Energy Suppliers (ESPEN). While in the country, the Commissioner will also visit the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal on the islet of Revithoussa, meet with Hellenic Gas Transmission System Operator (DESFA) and speak to the locally-accredited press. LNG from alternative suppliers is a central part of the EU strategy to cut its dependence from Russian gas imports.
At the Delphi Economic Forum, the Commissioner will participate in events on the climate emergency and energy prices that can be followed online upon registration. Alongside Vice-President for Promoting our European Way of Life, Margaritis Schinas, Commissioner Simson will also discuss Europe’s response to the evolving crisis and the consequences of the war in Ukraine at an event with media accredited to the Forum.
