Indonesia Energy Ministry: Attending the Energy and Climate Joint Ministerial Meeting G20, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Conveys Indonesia’s Steps Towards a Green Economy
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif together with Minister of Environment and Forestry (LHK) Siti Nurbaya Bakar virtually led the Delegation of the Republic of Indonesia at the Energy and Climate Joint Ministerial Meeting – G20 held in Naples, Italy (23/7). On that occasion the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources gave a brief intervention in the Main Session entitled Sustainable Recovery and Clean Energy Transitions, while the Minister of Environment and Forestry gave a brief intervention in the Main Session entitled Cities and Climate Actions.
In his intervention, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources conveyed a number of policy developments in Indonesia in order to support green projects, as well as the important role of renewable energy in providing access to energy and empowering people in rural and remote areas.
“Indonesia is also actively, responsively and inclusively developing low-carbon development policies and climate resilience while also recovering the economy from the effects of the global pandemic. Through the National Economic Recovery Program we provide economic support for small and medium enterprises (Small and Medium Enterprises – SMEs). ) and ensuring access to energy in order to achieve the SDGs targets,” said Minister Arifin.
Arifin also conveyed that targeted subsidies were given to vulnerable groups who were entitled to receive them, such as households with weak economies, to maintain productivity and quality of life in the midst of a pandemic situation.
Furthermore, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources conveyed the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration and harmonization of policies to support the national project. “According to the direction of the President of the Republic of Indonesia that access, affordability and sustainability will pave the way to a green economy,” said Arifin.
Arifin emphasized that the energy transition is understood plurally as a variety of policy steps, which refer to the national situation, technological and socio-economic capacities, as well as geographic challenges. In this regard, Indonesia is also preparing a long-term plan to switch from coal-fired power plants to cleaner plants, taking into account technological and socio-economic aspects.

The G20 is a multilateral forum for the world’s 20 largest economies, consisting of 19 countries and the European Union. Indonesia is the only ASEAN country in the G20. The issue of energy and climate transition is an issue that in recent years has received serious attention and has been discussed a lot in the G20 forum.
This ministerial level meeting is a summit that agreed to the Joint Ministerial Communique on Energy and Climate, which was discussed throughout the series of Energy Transitions and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ETCS WG) trials . ETCS WG combines two working groups, namely ETWG and CSWG. MEMR and KLHK have been actively participating since ETCS WG 1 was held on 22-23 March 2021.
