The American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) on April 26 recognized four Marathon Petroleum Corp. (MPC) refineries as part of their 2020 Annual Safety Awards for outstanding occupational and process safety programs and performance.
MPC facilities earning recognition for their 2020 performance include:
Distinguished Safety Award: Robinson refinery
The Distinguished Safety Award is awarded to the top sites with outstanding safety performance, program innovation and safety leadership. The team at the Robinson refinery was also recognized in 2019 with a Safety Achievement Award from AFPM.
Elite Gold Award: Detroit refinery
The Elite Gold Award recognizes facilities with safety performances in the top one percent of the industry, and that have demonstrated superior and consistent safety performance, program innovation and leadership. The Detroit refinery was previously recognized with the Distinguished Safety Award in both 2009 and 2011.
Elite Silver Award: Anacortes refinery and the Dickinson renewable fuels facility
The Elite Silver Award recognizes those sites that have attained top industry safety performance for the application year and demonstrated excellent program innovation and leadership over time. The Anacortes refinery was previously recognized as an Elite Silver Award recipient in 2015, an Elite Gold Award recipient in 2016, and an Elite Silver Award recipient in 2018. The Dickinson refinery was recognized as an Elite Silver Award recipient in 2017 and 2018 as well.
“We are absolutely committed to the safety of our employees and contractors,” said Ray Brooks, MPC executive vice president of Refining. “This commitment is reflected in our safety systems design, our well-maintained equipment and our focus on continuous learning and improvement. I am grateful to the employees at Robinson, Detroit, Anacortes and Dickinson for their consistent focus on safety, and congratulate them on this well-earned recognition.”
As part of AFPM’s mission to enhance and recognize outstanding workplace safety, the Safety Awards are part of a comprehensive program developed by the organization’s Safety and Health Committee to promote safe operations in the refining and petrochemical industries and recognize facilities with outstanding occupational and process safety records.

Because of this commitment, the refining and petrochemical industries rank among the safest of the 503 manufacturing sectors that the government monitors. This is an amazing accomplishment that can only be achieved with hard work, dedication and resiliency of everyone working in our industries.”
Facilities must meet stringent criteria to even apply for the AFPM safety awards, including:
- A total recordable incident rate of 0.30 or less for both employees and contractors
- Robust personal and process safety management systems
- No injuries associated with Life Critical activities
- No Process Safety Events with off-site impacts
- No Process Safety Events that required notification to the National Response Center
AFPM is a national trade association whose members comprise virtually all U.S. refining and petrochemical manufacturing capacity
