METI: State Minister Ota Attends International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in the 21st Century

From October 25 (Tue.) to 28 (Fri.), Ms. Ota Fusae, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited Washington, D.C., the United States, to participate in the International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in the 21st Century.

1. International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in the 21st Century
From October 26 to 28, the International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in the 21st Century was held by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Ms. Ota Fusae, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, participated in the ministerial meeting and its side event.

On October 26, when a statement was delivered from each country, State Minister Ota expressed the importance of the role of nuclear power toward achieving a stable supply of energy and green transformation, the importance of collaborating with countries that share the same values and maintaining and strengthening highly reliable supply chains, the news that steady progress is being made regarding the response to the Tokyo Electric Power Company Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident with the cooperation of the IAEA, and her respect for the IAEA for helping ensure the safety of nuclear power facilities in Ukraine and supporting the recovery from war damage. She also stated that Japan will make every effort to give support.



2. U.S.-Japan Nuclear Industry Dialogue
Ms. Ota joined the U.S.-Japan Nuclear Industry Dialogue held on the 26th, where she spoke about subjects related to the use of nuclear power, including the importance of countries that share the same values—such as the U.S. and Japan—to collaborate to maintain and strengthen highly reliable supply chains, and directly appealed to industrial representatives from both the U.S. and Japan. She also attended the signing of the Joint Statement for the Future of Nuclear Power, an agreement made between the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF) and Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI).



3. Meetings with Representatives
(1) Meeting with Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
On the 26th, State Minister Ota held a meeting with Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the IAEA, in which they exchanged views on subjects such as the safety review of ALPS treated water stored at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station scheduled for November.


(2) Meeting with Mr. David Turk, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy
On the 26th, State Minister Ota held a meeting with Mr. David Turk, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy, in which they both recognized the value of nuclear power and the role it fulfills, and exchanged views on the importance of strengthening U.S.-Japan cooperation in utilizing nuclear power, the development of U.S. LNG, and strengthening supply chains for batteries and other items.
