Imperial Oil today confirmed it is undertaking a controlled decline in Kearl oil sands operations due to continued pipeline disruption 1/3 of diluent from a spill that was detected on August 29, 2020. All of Kearl’s production activities are currently shut down, and the facility will remain ready to gradually ramp up production until full capacity. when the diluent pipeline is returned to service and the diluent supply restored.
The safety of our employees, contractors and the communities in which we operate remains Imperial Oil’s top priority, and the shutdown will be carried out in a safe and controlled manner. The company is currently studying several measures to try to mitigate the operational impacts.
For the moment, the impact of the interruption and the timetable for resuming activities are undetermined.
