The Secretary General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Mohammad Barkindo, in an interview with the teleSUR channel, once again recognized the leading role that Venezuela has played throughout the 61 years of the organization .

In this sense, the Secretary General highlighted the role of Juan Pablo Pérez Alfonzo for its conception, the rescue of the organization headed by Supreme Commander Hugo Chávez, and the current leadership of President Nicolás Maduro that allowed addressing the challenges of the oil market in 2016 and those presented in 2020, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

In this regard, he assured that the effort of the Venezuelan President was essential to establish the framework of the Declaration of Cooperation, recognizing the importance of joining other large non-OPEC producers in the construction of common policies aimed at restoring stability in the energy market. world, resulting in the realization of OPEC +.

Historic and unprecedented alliance, through which mechanisms for decision-making and subsequent monitoring have been designed, establishing the bases for a sustained and progressive recovery of the fair value of hydrocarbons.

“We have marked a historic moment in OPEC and in the world oil industry, because for the first time in 61 years of the organization’s existence we are working with countries that are not members (…) and thanks to Venezuela, thanks to President Nicolás Maduro, this was possible ”, highlighted the representative of the organization.

Referring to a recent study by OPEC, Secretary General Mohammad Barkindo stressed that “the world will continue to consume oil and gas in the future to come.”

In this sense, he highlighted the strategic nature of Venezuela by having the largest oil reserves in the world, which he described as “necessary” to combat energy poverty in the countries of the African continent and that they can achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) , approved by the United Nations.

He assured that the unilateral coercive measures imposed by the United States government limit the contribution of our country to counteract this reality. “The sanctions against Venezuela are also sanctions against Africa and other parts of the world that do not have access to these resources, but we remain hopeful that this will be resolved,” said Barkindo.
