Pertamina: Committed to Reduce Carbon Emissions, Pertamina Cooperates with National and Global Companies

PT Pertamina (Persero) explores cooperation with several international companies in the energy transition field. This collaboration is Pertamina’s commitment to support the clean energy transition program and the emission reduction target of 29% by 2030.

There are several collaborations between Pertamina and several multinational companies in Nusa Dua, Bali, Monday (29/8/2022). This collaboration was attended by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Arifin Tasrif, and President Director of Pertamina, Nicke Widyawati.

In his speech, Arifin said he was happy with the partnership and collaboration formed under this B20 international meeting umbrella. He said the challenges with the low-carbon technology application must be addressed together between developed and developing countries.

“I encourage more global partnerships between the private and also the public sector to accelerate implementation. We hope today’s partnership can encourage more business action through collaborative cooperation between the public and private sectors,” said Arifin.

Some of the collaborations carried out were a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing between PT Pertamina (Persero) and PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk on ‘Cooperation in Potential Business Relations and Data Exchange for the Low Emission Projects Development’.

This collaboration aims to develop low-emission projects by turning waste palm oil (empty fruit bunch and palm oil mill effluent) into Bioethanol and Biomethane products that can replace fossil fuels and support national energy independence.

Furthermore, the Green Industrial Cluster Development was signed in Jababeka between Pertamina Power New and Renewable Energy (NRE), Pertamina Power Indonesia (PPI), and PT Jababeka Infrastruktur through PLTS (Solar Panel) utilization in Jababeka office buildings.

The next collaboration is the Joint Study Agreement (JSA) between PPI and Pondera in the ‘Integrated Offshore Wind Energy & Hydrogen Production Facility’ collaboration. This JSA is a follow-up to the MoU between Pertamina NRE (PPI) and Pondera, a Dutch company, on April 21, 2022, regarding a Wind Power Plant (PLTB) development.

Lastly, the JSA between Pertamina (Persero), PEP, and Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) regarding the ‘JOGMEC on CO2 Injection for Enhanced Oil Recovery (CCUS-EOR) Project in Jatibarang Field’. In this collaboration, Pertamina and Jogmec collaborate on CO2 Injection activities in the Jatibarang Field through a joint study of the CO2 injection project implementation as an initial stage to further support the Full Field Scale CO2-EOR as a method to increase oil production and reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the Jatibarang Field, West Java.

President Director of Pertamina, Nicke Widyawati, said this cooperation was based on the high demand for renewable energy and low-carbon fuels expected to increase to combat greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels. The Oil & Gas Industry accounts for more than 40% of the total global GHG emissions. Thus, it plays a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“As a result, there is a need to accelerate the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy and low-carbon fuels. Supporting drivers are needed to address accelerating the energy transition challenges,” said Nicke.

She added that Pertamina, as one of the largest energy SOEs in Indonesia, showed its contribution in supporting the government’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as stated in the Paris Agreement. For this reason, the collaboration formed under the B20 umbrella between Pertamina and G20 partner countries in several low-carbon technologies joint development will play a key role in the energy transition. These include, PV solar panels for green industry clusters, palm oil waste for bioenergy utilization, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage.

“This is a collaboration between companies and countries, and most importantly, collaboration between humanity to contribute in real and tangible actions to achieve the consensus goal of providing equitable access to sustainable energy and protecting our climate for generations to come,” explained Nicke.
