Philips: Philips receives three Red Dot Design ‘best of the best’ ratings for ground-breaking design excellence
Philips’ purpose is to improve people’s health and well-being through meaningful innovation, with the aim of improving 2.5 billion lives per year by 2030, including 400 million in underserved communities. Innovative, customer-focused design is a key instrument in delivering on that commitment. Achieving three 2022 Red Dot Awards ‘best of the best’ ratings for ground-breaking design excellence is a unique illustration and endorsement of the strength of Philips’ design team. The company’s Red Dot: Best of the Best awards are for its MR 5300 1.5T MRI scanner, a smart, connected and sustainable diagnostic solution that is designed to simplify and automate complex clinical and operational tasks, while offering an industry-unique answer to minimizing the use of scarce helium, the Philips Avent Connected Baby Monitor, a new connected baby/video monitor system to support parents and their baby securely, and the Fresh Air Mask Lite, designed to allow people to comfortably breathe clean air and do it in style.
Our jury was especially impressed by the products that won a Red Dot: Best of the Best. This distinction is synonymous with ground-breaking design par excellence.

“Our jury was especially impressed by the products that won a Red Dot: Best of the Best. This distinction is synonymous with ground-breaking design par excellence,” said Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot. “Only a very small percentage of competition winners were awarded this special title, because a product needs to have a certain something in order to win this top award. The fact that you have received a distinction is proof that you have created brilliant design.”
In search of good design and innovation, the 48 expert members of this year’s international Red Dot Award Product Design jury assessed entries from around 60 different countries, looking for examples of outstanding design quality. The Philips MR 5300 was especially praised for its first-of-a-kind integrated cable management system, which solves a major workflow efficiency and safety challenge by preventing electrical cables from falling off the patient table or becoming trapped. Combined with other workflow improvement features, the result is a 30% faster change-over time between patients, with a patient set-up time of less than one minute.

The full-HD Philips Avent Connected Baby Monitor consists of a baby and a parent unit. The feed from the baby unit can also be viewed on a smartphone. The system allows parents to interact with their baby in a secure way from anywhere at any time of the day. The product is designed in line with Philips’ EcoDesign requirements aimed at improving energy efficiency, especially during the customer use phase, reflecting the sustainability mindset and awareness of many young parents. The Philips Fresh Air Mask Lite won a best of the best award for its N95 filter protection coupled with the comfort afforded by its light weight and active electronic fan technology.
“At Philips we create innovations that positively impact people’s lives. We use customer-focused design principles to create innovations with user experiences that help to enhance the quality and efficiency of personal and professional healthcare delivery,” said Sean Carney, Chief Design Officer at Philips. “We also apply Eco Design at every stage of the design process to ensure our solutions meet ambitious life-cycle sustainability and energy efficiency targets, because taking care of the planet is as important to improving people’s lives as the solutions we develop to help people live healthily.”
Other products among this year’s Philips Red Dot Design Awards include products from the company’s mother and child care portfolio, such as the Avent Natural Response Teat, which helps babies use their natural drinking rhythm, and personal care products such as the Philips OneBlade 360, which uses revolutionary technology designed for facial styling and body grooming.
