Carbon-free energy sources – hydroelectric power plants, nuclear power plants, renewable energy sources – in 2020 occupied 40.8% in the structure of Russian generation, said Andrey Maksimov, Director of the Electricity Development Department of the Ministry of Energy of Russia, during the session “Russian Energy: Achievements of the Green Sector and New Challenges of Energy Transition for Traditional Industries ”at the Environmental Wellbeing Forum.

Andrey Maksimov noted that the impact of the global climate agenda on the development of the Russian fuel and energy complex is due to the fact that a significant share of greenhouse gas emissions – about 33.6% – falls on the generation of heat and electricity.

At the same time, according to him, the share of carbon-free energy in Russia is significant. “In 2020, 40.8% of all electricity in the country was generated by completely carbon-free sources of electricity (hydroelectric power plants – 20.2%, nuclear power plants – 20.6%, renewable energy sources – 0.32%),” said the Director of the Department.

Andrey Maksimov also recalled the main activities contributing to the implementation of environmental policy – the renewable energy support program, selection of projects for the modernization of generating equipment for thermal power plants in price zones (COMMod), also with the use of innovative energy equipment, a program for the withdrawal of old capacity and a new one for Russia microgenerating device market.
