Shanghai Hosts Fifth CNPC International Cooperation Forum & Signing Ceremony

On November 5, the fifth CNPC International Cooperation Forum & Signing Ceremony was held in Shanghai, as a sideline event of the fifth China International Import Expo (CIIE).

Themed “Energy Security and Low-carbon Transition in the Changing World”, in-depth discussions and exchanges were carried out on topics such as “Green and Low-carbon Transition and International Energy Cooperation in the Changing World”, “Working Together to Build a Safe and Clean Global Energy System”, “Building a Clean & Low-carbon Energy Industrial Chain” and “Powering a Sustainable Future”, etc.

Dai Houliang, Chairman of CNPC delivered a keynote speech. Sultan Al Jaber, Managing Director & Group CEO of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman & CEO of TotalEnergies (Total), made keynote speeches via video.

Dai Houliang said that, balancing energy security and energy transition is an important issue for us, and it is our common mission at present and in the future to pursue green development, expand opening-up and cooperation, and safeguard the security of energy supply during the energy transition. To pursue green development and energy security, we must adopt an open outlook and work together to address global challenges of energy security. We must strengthen international cooperation on all fronts, promote the efficient allocation of resources, and push forward the global deployment of new energy products, technologies and services. We must strengthen policy coordination, and jointly build a more equitable, balanced, open, and inclusive global energy governance system.

“Pursuing green development and supplying reliable energy to fuel our customers’ growth and power people’s happy life”, CNPC carries out extensive cooperation globally across the whole industrial chain, covering oil and gas, new energies, refining & chemicals, new materials, international trade, petroleum and petrochemical engineering services, etc.,” said Mr. Dai. He added, “We will step up our efforts in exploration and production, and enhance our oil and gas supply capacity. We will pursue green and low-carbon development and forge ahead to achieve energy transition and the “30·60” Goals . We will accelerate breakthroughs in core technologies, strive to lead green and low-carbon development, and expedite the steady transformation into an integrated international energy company with businesses covering oil and gas, geothermal energy, power and hydrogen.

In the context of new developments and challenges facing the oil and gas industry, Mr. Dai put forward the following four proposals. First, we should ensure continued investment in energy exploration and production. While ensuring a stable supply of fossil energy at present, we need to speed up the deployment and development of new energy, improve the resilience of the industrial chain, and ensure sustainable global energy supply in the long run. Second, we should build a consensus on jointly safeguarding energy security and strive to maintain sound cooperation and shared security in the energy sector. Third, we should enhance cooperation across the oil and gas industry chains, promote efficient development and utilization of energy resources, and expand trade and production capacity cooperation. Fourth, we should expand the scope of green and low-carbon cooperation, explore cooperation models for new energy development, and strengthen think tank exchanges and joint research on green and low-carbon development, scientific and technological innovation, as well as new business models.

Sultan Al Jaber delivered a keynote speech entitled “Building a Clean & Low-carbon Energy Industrial Chain”. He introduced ADNOC’s efforts on carbon intensity reduction and the diversified development of new energies. He also expressed his expectation that cooperation should be strengthened in the fields of refining and chemicals, as well as zero-carbon hydrogen and other new energies. Patrick Pouyanné delivered a keynote speech entitled “A New Type of Partnership in the Changing Global Energy Landscape”. He shared his insights on low-carbon transition and looked forward to deepening cooperation and making more contributions to energy security and sustainable energy development.

Following the keynote speeches, the Executive Dialogue on Strengthening Energy Cooperation to Power a Sustainable Future was carried out, which was chaired by Sun Xiansheng, Chairman of the International Society for Energy Transition Studies (ISETS) and former Secretary General of the International Energy Forum (IEF). During the Dialogue, Zhang Daowei, Vice President of PetroChina, Koh Tze San, President of ExxonMobil China Gas Marketing, Olusegun O. Kuteyi, President of Chevron China, Simon Yang, bp Group SVP and bp China President, Gianni Di Giovanni, Chairman of Eni China BV, and Wang Zhen, President of CNOOC Energy Economics Institute, discussed issues such as pathways to energy transition, opportunities and challenges for international energy cooperation in the era of major changes, as well as innovative business models and partnerships amid energy transition.

Jia Yong, Assistant President of CNPC, presided over the forum and signing ceremony. CNPC signed 30 purchase agreements with 30 partners, including Southland Resources Co., Ltd., Halliburton Energy Services (China) Ltd., and Schlumberger China S. A.

In the past five years, CIIE has been an important platform for CNPC to strengthen international business cooperation and showcase its corporate image. On the past five editions of CNPC International Cooperation Forum, the company signed purchase contracts with a total of 142 suppliers, in an effort to facilitate trade and cooperation with global partners.
