On Tuesday, Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm traveled to New York City to tout the Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework negotiated by President Biden, and the ways it will build a clean energy economy, address environmental injustices, and create good-paying, union jobs.

While President Biden is in the middle of negotiating an infrastructure bill, his Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm toured the city Tuesday to see how clean energy jobs can be made. “We want to make sure we get the benefits of those investments including the jobs associated with installing the chargers and maintaining the chargers, et cetera, and the jobs associated with building the cars that will be charged there.”

She claims communities that have been disproportionately impacted by environmental pollution are the communities that will be invested in first and there are efforts to make it happen.
“It’s called the environmental Justice40 Initiative which means that 40% of the benefits or the investments that are being made right now, are being negotiated in Congress, should go to communities that are left behind,” she said. She also visited UPROSE in Sunset Park, a Latino organization focusing on sustainability and environmental injustice.

Crain’s New York: Unions will get first crack at green jobs, Granholm says
She called Biden, “the most pro-union president,” and noted that the administration wants the new job opportunities created by the plan “to be union jobs.” “You will see that there is a commitment to making sure union labor is created,” Granholm said. “He is serious about it.” The meeting between big labor and the Energy Department chief was held at the downtown Manhattan headquarters of 32BJ SEIU, the 80,000-member service workers union.

For her part, the Granholm told labor leaders that the Biden administration understood how important it will be for the federal government to help communities that previously powered fossil fuel energy production make the change to renewables, which the Department of Energy believes could contain a $23 trillion global market. “We are committed to helping these communities, in particular, move to the types of energy that we know will be in demand globally,” she said, listing hydrogen power, nuclear power and carbon capture and storage. “We want to be building that. Let’s just make that stuff here in America.”
